Best Destinations for April 2026: The Complete Travel Guide

April is travel’s best-kept secret.

The summer crowds haven’t arrived. Hotel prices are 20–40% below their July peak. The weather across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa hits a sweet spot that July simply can’t match. This is the Goldilocks window, not too hot, not too cold, not too expensive, and never too crowded.

Here are the Best destinations for April, including 7 fresh destinations you haven’t seen on every other travel list.

14 Best destinations for April

1. South Korea – Cherry Blossoms Everywhere

Why April? South Korea’s cherry blossom season reaches peak bloom across Seoul on April 7–12, 2026, with the Yeouido Spring Flower Festival running April 4–9. Unlike Japan, which gets all the attention, Seoul is uncrowded by comparison and equally spectacular. Gyeongbokgung Palace, framed by pink sakura, Seokchon Lake’s reflective waterway, and Namsan Park’s hillside walks are all at their absolute best in early April.

What to do:

  • Yeouido Spring Flower Festival (April 4–9): 1,900 cherry trees along the Han River
  • Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Festival (April 3–5): flowers against ancient UNESCO heritage sites
  • Jinhae Gunhangje Festival (Mar 27–Apr 5): South Korea’s largest blossom event, naval parades, fireworks
  • Bukchon Hanok Village at sunrise — traditional architecture without a tourist crowd
  • Jeju Island: canola flower fields + cherry blossoms simultaneously in early April

Weather: 10–20°C (50–68°F). Perfect walking weather.

Budget: $80–130/day mid-range

Honest note: Peak bloom lasts only 7–10 days. Book accommodation 6–8 weeks ahead for early April. Gyeongju and Busan offer blossoms with significantly fewer tourists than Seoul.

2. Cyprus – Europe’s Warmest April Destination

Why April? Cyprus averages 19–23°C (66–73°F) in April with 12 hours of daily sunshine and only 20mm of rainfall, making it the warmest, sunniest place in Europe this month. Orthodox Easter (April 12, 2026) brings extraordinary local celebrations: candlelit processions, traditional flaounes pastry baking, and village festivals that most tourists never witness.

What to do:

  • Paphos archaeological ruins: UNESCO mosaics and Tombs of the Kings, pre-summer crowd levels
  • Attend Orthodox Easter night mass in a village church (April 11–12)
  • Protaras beaches: Fig Tree Bay is crystal-clear and rarely crowded in April
  • Nicosia: the only divided capital in the world — cross the Green Line into North Cyprus for the day

Weather: 19–23°C (66–73°F). 9 hours of sunshine daily. Sea: 18–19°C.

Budget: $90–150/day mid-range

3. Madeira, Portugal – The Flower Island in Full Bloom

Why April? Madeira’s famous Flower Festival begins April 30, 2026, but the levada walking trails are already lined with hydrangeas and birds of paradise throughout April. Add whale watching (28 species regularly spotted off Funchal), and it becomes one of the most unique islands in the world for spring travel.

What to do:

  • Levada do Caniçal: cliff-edge coastal walk with Atlantic views
  • Pico do Arieiro sunrise hike: above the clouds, panoramic volcanic scenery
  • Whale and dolphin watching from Funchal harbour
  • Monte Palace Tropical Gardens: cable car up, wicker toboggan sled down

Weather: 18–22°C (64–72°F). Mild Atlantic climate.

Budget: $100–160/day mid-range

Honest note: Madeira is for hikers and nature lovers, not sunbathers. Dramatic cliffs, jungle-lined levada paths, and volcanic pools, not white sand.

4. Iceland – Last Northern Lights of the Season

Why April? April is the last viable month for Northern Lights before the midnight sun eliminates dark skies for summer. Crucially, 2025–2026 is at the peak of an 11-year solar cycle, making auroras brighter and more frequent than any period since 2015. Beyond auroras: warming temperatures, whale watching season beginning off Húsavík, and full access to the Golden Circle.

What to do:

  • Northern Lights: last chance before midnight sun
  • Golden Circle: Geysir, Gullfoss, Þingvellir National Park
  • Snæfellsnes Peninsula: Kirkjufell mountain (as seen in Game of Thrones)
  • Sólheimajökull Glacier hike

Weather: 2–8°C (36–46°F). Cold. Pack proper layers.

Budget: $180–280/day. Iceland is expensive, but the shoulder season is 20–30% cheaper than summer.

Honest note: Aurora viewing is weather-dependent. Stay 5+ nights to improve chances. Early April has more darkness than late April.

5. Cape Town, South Africa – Autumn Warmth & Wine Country

Why April? Cape Town enters autumn in April with average highs of 23°C (73°F), fewer crowds than December–February summer, and the Cape Winelands at their most atmospheric.

What to do:

  • Table Mountain Cable Car: on clear April days, views extend to Robben Island
  • Franschhoek and Stellenbosch wine route in autumn colour
  • Boulders Beach: African penguins, uncrowded in April
  • Cape Point: the southwesternmost tip of Africa, with dramatic cliffside walks

Weather: 10–23°C (50–73°F). Mild autumn.

Budget: $100–180/day mid-range

Honest note: Table Mountain’s cable car closes on windy days. Build in a buffer day, worth the wait.

Morocco is considered safe for tourists, with 95% of visitors reporting feeling safe (InterNations survey) and a 10–25% decline in overall crime since 2023. The US State Department rates Morocco at Level 2, the same rating as France, Germany, and Italy.

What to do:

  • Sahara Desert overnight at Merzouga: star-filled sky, dunes at sunrise
  • Essaouira: Atlantic-facing blue-and-white medina, fresh seafood, surf culture
  • Fez’s ancient medina: tanneries, madrasas, UNESCO labyrinths

Weather: 20–26°C (68–79°F). Warm and dry. Ideal.

Budget: $60–100/day mid-range

Honest note: The main risk in Morocco is petty scams, not safety. Use a crossbody bag, agree on taxi prices in advance, and ignore unsolicited “guides.”

7. Turkey – Cappadocia in Wildflower Season

Why April? Cappadocia’s fairy chimney valleys are carpeted in wildflowers in April, making the already surreal landscape even more photogenic. Hot air balloon conditions are ideal – calm mornings, clear skies. The Aegean coast (Ephesus, Fethiye) is warming with shoulder season prices in effect.

What to do:

  • Sunrise hot air balloon over Rose Valley, book 6–8 weeks ahead
  • Göreme Open Air Museum: cave churches with Byzantine frescoes
  • Ihlara Valley: riverside canyon hike through rock-cut monasteries

Why April? New Zealand ranks #3 on the Global Peace Index (score: 1.282), the third safest country in the world, and April is one of its finest months. As the Northern Hemisphere enters spring, New Zealand enters a warm, settled autumn with lower tourist numbers, golden foliage in Queenstown and the South Island, and some of the best hiking conditions of the year on the famous multi-day trails. The summer crowds are gone, prices are lower, and the landscape is extraordinary.

What to do:

  • Milford Sound, Fiordland: one of the world’s great natural wonders – a dramatic fjord, year-round accessible
  • Queenstown Autumn: golden poplar-lined lakesides and quieter adventure activities (bungy, jet boat)

Budget: $130–200/day mid-range

Honest note: New Zealand is significantly cheaper in April than December–February peak, flights from Europe are long (24+ hours), but the country is among the most rewarding long-haul destinations in the world. Drive on the left — factor in a rental car.

12. Vietnam – End of Peak Means Lower Prices

⚠️ A Note on the Middle East in 2026

Following the escalation of hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran from late February 2026, several Middle Eastern destinations carry elevated travel advisories that were not in place when this region was last reviewed.

Jordan — previously one of OffsetMiles’ top April recommendations has been removed from this article. As of March 2, 2026, the US State Department issued a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory for Jordan, the Canadian government issued an “Avoid Non-Essential Travel” advisory, and the UK FCDO warned of “significant security risks and travel disruption” due to drone and missile threats from Iran. While Petra, Wadi Rum and Amman have not been directly struck, this is not a risk OffsetMiles is comfortable recommending to leisure travelers at this time.

We will continue to monitor the situation and reinstate Jordan when conditions allow. It remains one of the world’s great travel destinations and will return to these pages.

FAQ

Yes. Morocco carries a US State Department Level 2 advisory — the same rating as France, Germany, and Italy — focused on petty crime awareness in tourist areas, not conflict. 95% of tourists report feeling safe (InterNations survey). It is completely unrelated to the Middle East conflict situation.

In Iceland, yes — but it's the final window. April is the last month with enough darkness before the midnight sun takes over. 2026 is at the peak of an 11-year solar cycle, making this one of the best aurora years in over a decade. Go early in April.

Absolutely — it is one of the best months to visit. Autumn colours, settled weather, 30–40% lower prices than December–February peak, and no crowds on the key trails and fjords. The only downside is the flight length from the Northern Hemisphere.

Botswana's Okavango Delta — the annual floodwaters arrive in April, creating exceptional game viewing conditions at 25–35% below July–October peak prices. The best value entry point for one of Africa's greatest wildlife experiences.
